F & S names LightStream Tech for Product Innovation Awards'04

In its recent analysis entitled U.S. Advanced Water Treatment Equipment Markets, Frost & Sullivan named LightStream Technologies Inc. as the recipient of the 2004 Product Innovation Award for its advanced pulsed ultraviolet (UV) water disinfection system.

LightStream's product platform, which includes LightStream LSi, LightStream LS, and LightStream LC, is the only one of its kind to use pulsed UV water disinfection technology for larger scale applications.

In its analysis, Frost & Sullivan recognized LightStream for its successful efforts in capturing the essence of UV disinfection and for offering end users an advanced water treatment system with enhanced safety features and performance.

LightStream products are proven for their effectiveness in combating microbial pathogens and for capabilities to deliver ultra-high UV doses associated with defeating infectious biological agents at a treatment capacity of up to one million gallons of potable water or wastewater per day. Currently, the company has abundant opportunities in large-scale municipal drinking water and wastewater treatment, further enhanced by the new LightStream LS model with expanded treatment capacity up to five million gallons per day scheduled to be delivered in 2005.

Unlike other UV water disinfection systems, LightStream's patented technology delivers UV light through short, high-current electrical pulses without the use of mercury lamps or chemicals. This method greatly enhances operational safety by eliminating potential hazards caused by the accidental release of toxic mercury into water or the creation of disinfection byproducts.

A LightStream product platform's uniqueness lies in its ability to provide precise and confirmed UV dose in real time. Its digitized operating system is capable of gauging and adjusting pulse emission to meet specific dose requirements.

Since the LightStream system operates at low temperatures close to that of the influent water, heat-induced fouling does not occur on the lamp surface. This eliminates the need for lamp cleaning, thus improving the ease of operation.

Key beneficiaries of the pulsed UV water disinfection system include industrial wastewater treatment, industrial process water treatment, municipal wastewater treatment, and small to mid-size potable water systems.

In addition to operating on the municipal and the industrial level, LightStream is making concerted efforts towards development of ultra-high intensity pulsed UV water disinfection technology for commercial, residential, and air sterilization applications, which is likely to further expand its innovative product portfolio.
